Soft Blue Eyes - Body Oil
Soft Blue Eyes began as a creative exercise — a fictional body oil brand, conceived and written as a piece of speculative work. The product doesn't exist. The philosophy behind it does.
What follows is the About page copy I developed for it: the place it comes from, the thinking behind the formulation, the rhythm it works with, the ritual it supports.
If you're curious about working together on something similar, you're welcome to get in touch.
Soft Blue Eyes is a body oil made in Scotland, from plants that grow here – along and in the rivers and lochs, along the coast and in the sea itself. The landscape is where it began, not a selling point.
Soft Blue Eyes refers to a way of looking and being in the landscape.
Place
Scotland is a water country, and if you live here that gets into you. Walking by the water. Looking out over the water. Watching the water. Swimming in the water. Smelling the water. Fresh water and salt water. There is something in how differently the two waters feel – the rivers and lochs with their cold clarity and infused colour, the sea with its foams, sprays, mists and constant tidal movement. That difference is quietly present in the two oils. Fresh draws from the fresh water landscape: Scots pine, rosehip and white water lily. Salt draws from the coast: sea buckthorn from the dunes, algae and kelp from the sea. Two waters, two oils, one body moving through one day.
Nourishment
The thinking behind the composition is simple. More akin to a food philosophy, a simple recipe that uses good ingredients rather than something highly formulated from a laboratory or factory. A short list of recognisable ingredients, nothing synthetic, nothing highly processed. Plant oils, each chosen for where it is from and what it does.
The skin receives the nourishment from oil in a similar way that the digestive system receives it when taken internally. Skin is skin. Face and feet, men and women, any age.
No difference between internally and externally. Not different products for different parts of the skin. No difference between genders, ages, races.
A healthy body is a beautiful body. Beauty is about what is already there, not about buying it in a product.
Rhythm
A healthy body is generously supported by following the natural rhythms of night and day. Simple. The two oils mirror this rhythm. Mornings and Evenings. The morning oil is about the cold shower, the early swim, sun rising, becoming alert, awake and invigorated. The evening oil is about the warm bath or shower, washing off the day, settling down, preparing to rest well. The morning oil is light and fast absorbing. The evening oil is rich, slow and lavish.
Ritual
Add ritual to rhythm and you deepen the support for a healthy body. The ritual is simple: take a pause, warm the oil between your palms before applying and when you apply, notice what you notice. A body scan of sorts, using your hands, your eyes, your attention and the oil. How are your calves, your thighs, your feet this morning? How are your neck, your chest, your shoulders this evening? Gentle questions without an urgency for answers, without a fixed order.
Soft Blue Eyes body oil helps you nourish and explore the landscape that is your body.
