Vergelegen — one of the oldest and most significant wine estates in South Africa, established in 1700 in the Helderberg, Western Cape. Photographed slowly, in the garden and among the buildings.

Soetmelksvlei — a restored Cape farm of the late 19th century, part of Babylonstoren in the Western Cape. A working farmyard with the tools and textures of a self-sufficient life. Photographed slowly.

Klip huis. Waenhuis. Kraal. Murasie. Plaas. The Sandveld of South Africa rendered in its own language — the words for its structures, its birds, its animals, its plants. And then the Maartblom, pushing up through the sand. Mooi rooi en sag pienk.

Weskus. The West Coast of South Africa - a landscape so familiar it takes care to see it freshly. Elandsbaai, Lambert's Bay, Doringbaai. Rock swimmers, walkers on white sand beaches. Jetties and the smell of guano. Fresh fish on the barbeque.

One of my favourite things about being a tourist is the photo opportunities — while carefully avoiding the obvious views. Aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, moored in Leith: portholes, silverware, the kitchen, the laundry, the uniforms hanging pressed and ready.

Walking around a winter city. Stone, lamplight, the National Gallery at night, a whisky bar, a tenement stair. Edinburgh seen slowly, on foot, after dark.

A neighbour who crafts wooden spoons asked if I'd photograph them for selling online. What followed was an exploration of surface, light, context and natural backgrounds - beach, sand, seaweed, seawater, pebble, gravel, ice. The same object, taken on a journey.

Air, water, sunlight, stone. The essentials. Looking back over years of photographs, these are the elements that keep returning. Perhaps because they are essential. Definitely because they are beautiful — always, at every scale.
